THREE GRACES COMMAND
"Sir, I believe we have acquired the signal."
It had begun. For 25 generations we had looked for it to happen--
like death it had always happened to someone else.
General Luce moved over to the machine. There was only a wave
coming in from the furtherest probe. Just a glowing yellow wave
on the dark blue ground. And there it was, like a serpent hung out
to dry from right to left, leaving only the last few inches wagging.
Six seconds drug by as all eyes were glued to the screen.
"You are correct, Lieutenant," the General said.
His Aide moved to his side.
"General Luce, Sir, do you want me to call in the pilots?"
"Not yet. We're being given plenty of time. The Invaders want us to
be at full force. After at least 20,000 years of having things their way
they would hope for a good fight from someone.
I'll be in my quarters, Gentlemen, if anything else develops."
